New Mileage Currency Takes Off for British Airways, Iberia and UK Airmiles Customers

IAG announces the launch of Avios, a new shared global rewards currency for members of the British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus and the UK Airmiles programmes.

In November 2011 BA Miles, UK Airmiles and Iberia Plus points will be renamed ‘Avios’. The currency will give members of British Airways’ Executive Club, Iberia Plus and the UK Airmiles** programme more ways to collect and redeem Avios.

The UK Airmiles programme will be relaunched as Avios in November 2011 with a major marketing and advertising campaign.

Key changes include:-

  • For the first time Airmiles members can collect Avios on British Airways and Iberia flight bookings
  • A clearer redemption map for customers of all three programmes, breaking the world into nine simple zones so customers know exactly how many Avios they need.
  • For regular collectors* of British Airways Executive Club and Airmiles programmes flying return to European destinations in zones one to three on British Airways and Iberia, a new ‘reward flight saver’ is offered where the fare will be the Avios and £27.00.
  • Cabin upgrades using Avios (offline booking for Airmiles customers).
  • A simple £25 for BA Executive Club and Airmiles members per person to make redemption booking changes.
  • A new range of travel reward redemption options, including hotels and car hire for BA Executive Club members.
  • More flexibility as Airmiles customers will be able to use Avios for one-way flights or to mix and match the airports they fly to and from, e.g. into New York JFK and back from Boston.
  • Removal of the regional flight supplement for Airmiles customers.

Taxes, fees and charges currently included in bookings made using Airmiles will be charged separately in cash for flights to all zones. However, regular collectors will only pay £27.00 and the Avios for return European flights on British Airways and Iberia in zones one, two and three.

Customers of the UK Airmiles programme can continue to book under the current terms until 15 December 2011.

Members of each programme will continue to be able to collect Avios with leading banks, credit cards, hotel, car hire and retail partners.

Full details of the changes to the BA Executive Club and Airmiles programmes are being communicated to customers from 1 September 2011.

Notes to editors:-

  • *Regular collectors are those customers who have collected at least one Avios in the preceding 12 months.
  • Regular collectors will pay the Avios and £27.00 per person return for economy flights to zones one to three; this applies to destinations such as Paris, Madrid or Athens.
  • Regular collectors buying a one-way fare using Avios to zones one to three

will pay £13.50 (BA Executive Club and Airmiles members) – exactly half the return amount. For all flights over 2,000 miles (zones four to nine) customers will pay the fare with Avios and the airline taxes, fees and charges separately in cash. Taxes, fees and charges will apply to all zones regardless of distance unless customers are eligible for a ‘reward flight saver’ fare.

  • **The UK Airmiles programme is operated by The Mileage Company, part of IAG, British Airways and Iberia’s parent company.
